Pediatric Dentistry: What is a Well Baby Visit?

Pediatric Dentist Phoenix, AZ
Many parents are surprised to hear about the benefits of a well baby visit and how early they can take their child in to a pediatric dentistry office. By learning more about what a well baby visit is, when such an appointment is necessary and what to expect during the checkup, parents can make a more informed decision if it is the right time to have a child see a pediatric dentist.

Pediatric dentistry and well baby visits

Well baby visits are strongly encouraged by pediatric dentistry professionals as they can help detect any possible issues early on and educate the parents on how to care for their child’s teeth properly as they grow older. The following is an overview of well baby visits, including what they are and how the treatment process works.

A well baby visit defined

A well baby visit is a routine visit with a pediatric dentist to ensure the child’s teeth and jaw are in good health. During the visit, the pediatric dentist will check for potential concerns that the parents should watch for as the child grows older. Perhaps the most important reason for well baby visits is to establish a relationship with the pediatric dentist. It also allows children to get used to visiting the dentist at an early age to reduce the risk of dental anxiety as they grow older.

When to consider a well baby visit

Pediatric dentists typically recommend a well baby visit after the first tooth appears or no later than the child’s first birthday. Although for many this seems early, the reality is teeth are vulnerable to cavities as soon as they come through. By scheduling a well baby visit early on, a pediatric dentist can ensure the child gets a head start on good oral health. It is also a great opportunity to educate parents on how to properly care for their baby’s teeth.

What to expect during the visit

Of course, there are no invasive or painful procedures that should take place during a well baby visit. The main goals are to check for any early issues after the first primary tooth comes through, get the baby accustomed to dental visits at a young age and educate parents on how to care for a child’s teeth and prevent cavities. During the visit, the pediatric dentist will check for any issues of the teeth and jaw and may clean the child’s teeth in a noninvasive manner.

How to prepare for the visit

It is normal for very young children to be anxious and hesitant as they enter a pediatric dentistry office. However, helping kids understand what is going on and being there with them the entire time can help make the first well baby visit as easy as possible.
