First VisitPediatric Dentistry
We recommend that your child’s first dental visit should be scheduled around when the first tooth erupts. The most important part of the visit the conversation you will have with us about the prevention of cavities. Diet, oral hygiene, fluoride, and dental development are the important topics we will discuss and we will explain how if you follow some simple rules, you can ensure your child remains cavity free. Another important part of the first visit is getting to know and becoming comfortable with us. Frequent, easy, early visits build trust and help put your child at ease during future dental visits should they ever need treatment. Usually the examination of your infant or young child is very quick and performed in your lap to make your child feel comfortable.
Parents should be very positive about their child’s first visit and refrain from using any words that could cause unnecessary fear. Often parents have anxieties of their own about the dentist and we want to make sure that children don’t arrive with any negative expectations. We are very experienced in communicating with children who may be anxious. We try to explain what we are doing in positive, age appropriate, and easy to understand terms.
We will record the child’s dental and medical history, complete a comprehensive examination and discuss any findings with you. We will also review the importance of maintaining a good dental health program with you and your child to ensure a healthy and beautiful smile for life!
Rest assured, in our office you will NEVER be asked by us to leave your child’s side. We have an open-door policy. If you would like to accompany your child for his or her visits, your presence will be welcomed.
