Phase 1 Orthodontic Checkup for Your Child Aged 6 to 9 Years Old

A Phase 1 orthodontic appointment is part of proper childcare. You should bring your child to your pediatric orthodontist to prevent the consequences of malocclusion later in life. Even if your child does not need braces right away, this checkup allows the monitoring of your child’s oral development. An early age range of six to nine years old is ideal. Here are the details about bringing your young child to a Phase 1 orthodontic dental appointment.

Why this age range matters

At six to nine years old, adult teeth start erupting. A child needs to see a pediatric orthodontist. This is an effective way to correct or prevent orthodontic issues. Jaw and tooth problems can surface because of thumb-sucking, losing primary teeth early, or accidents. There are even cases when such issues run in the family.

A Phase 1 orthodontic appointment allows the pediatric orthodontist to catch the problem early. The child does not need to wear braces during this age. Yet, this type of dental checkup will give the pediatric orthodontist the chance to start monitoring the child’s jaw and tooth development. If the child does need braces, this checkup can determine the right kind of orthodontic appliances.

Early braces

Each child has a different set of needs. Some children wear braces when all of the adult teeth have erupted. In some cases, children need to start wearing braces while the baby teeth are still in. The reason for this is poor bite and teeth development.

Placing Phase 1 orthodontic braces on baby teeth can solve specific problems. Baby teeth can serve as anchor dentition to close the gaps or spaces in between teeth. The pediatric orthodontist can close open bites by using orthodontic bands. Baby teeth can serve as adult teeth when it comes to tooth mobility. If the child needs to wear early braces, then the child should also avoid hard foods, have monthly adjustments, and wear ortho bands as well.

Baby teeth have shorter roots than adult teeth. The movement should have a low level of force. This improves the teeth alignment without damaging the erupting permanent teeth. Placing braces on primary teeth is a good tool for pediatric orthodontists. It is an effective way to give a child proper face, jaw, and teeth development.

Phase 1 orthodontic appointments also prompt the pediatric orthodontist to help the parents detect and correct various issues. Speech problems, breathing troubles, and teeth grinding can all result from teeth misalignment. Seeing a pediatric orthodontist can also help with issues like flared front teeth and single tooth crossbite. Regular Phase 1 orthodontic checkups can help treat these problems early.
